In 2004, Stern appointed Mr. John H. Biggs, former chairman, president and CEO of the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF), the Citigroup Distinguished Fellow in Leadership and Ethics for the 2004-05 academic year.

The New York University Microfinance Initiative is a newly formed organization involving students from Stern, the Wagner School of Public Policy and representatives from the United Nations.
The United Nations has designated 2005 to be International Year of Microcredit, and the NYU Microfinance Initiative was formed to support these efforts by creating an environment for students, alumni and professors to engage in an open dialogue about the sector, learning more about current trends and organizing activities to promote microfinance as a tool for alleviating poverty both locally and globally.

Over the course of four days from January 4th through 7th, more than 30 members of TANG took on the San Francisco Bay Area. The purpose of this trip was to learn about the companies businesses and make contacts with individuals at each company. We visited nine companies on the trip, including Apple, Visa, Inter, HP, BEA, EA, Konami USA, Openwave and Oracle.

The American Bankruptcy Institute, in conjunction with Northwestern's Kellogg School of Business, put together the first annual Corporate Restructuring Competition, sponsored by Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin and held in mid November.
NYU was chosen as one of the first eight schools to participate in the competition, along with Stanford, Berkeley, Michigan, Wharton, Kellogg, and Chicago.

Friday's conference hosted by the NYU Stern Markets, Ethics and Law Program and titled "Institutional Investors as Owners" featured John H. Biggs as keynote speaker.
The day included two panels and a lunchtime debate. The first panel, moderated by Professor Ingo Walter, featured three panelists - Lynn Turner, Managing Director of Research at Glass Lewis & Co.

Twenty-four groups featuring NYU students and alumni have been selected as semifinalists for the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies' 2004-05 Business Plan Competition.
Included are 16 traditional business plans and eight business plans on the social track.

For many Stern students, the month of January is a time for rest and relaxation, a chance to take a break from their studies. But this past January, a group of 39 full-time and part-time students - including myself - eagerly opted to participate in 10 days of classes.
