It is beyond belief. Half a semester is behind us. Over two months (counting the unforgettable pre-term) have gone by, leaving us a little out of breath, mostly because of recruiting and academics, but some due to partying and general overwhelming NYC.

Some times in life call out for timeouts and some rumination. Though this is not the most obvious of those, I still believe it is a good time to stop, take a recount, and see what we have accomplished so far.

On our assets sheet (sorry, test in Accounting in two hours) we have: being admitted to one of the best schools in the world; being courted by some of the most prominent companies in the world; living in one of the greatest cities in the world; meeting some of the most successful people in the world (our classmates).

If you noticed, the comparison scale was quite impressive - the rest of the world. Whenever I talk to someone from my pre-Stern life I get this (good) envy wave washing me for the sheer luck I have to be where I am. At those moments I understand that even though I am struggling now with everything, I have to take a few nanoseconds to, if not completely rest, than at least smell the laurels.

Everyday, and I mean every single one, I meet people who will one day be invited back to Stern as prominent speakers, people who will head organizations, charities, governments and generally help to shape parts of our world. I call them block-mates, classmates or just friends.

This is only reinforced by today's speakers and professionals that come to visit us. Most of them rose from similar settings, only a few of them were handed the success they now lay claims to. I am sure that most of them never truly believed that they'll reach where they are now, even if they dared to dream it.

I think that this period in time is the best to do that mental recap. To go over what we have and what we are overlooking. I personally intend to do just that (after Gode and Simon will have their fun with the midterms, of course).

Today I'll throw in a quote from a friend -

"The proper office of a friend is to side with you when you are in the wrong. Nearly anybody will side with you when you are in the right." - Mark Twain

I guess that means that today's perspective is to side a little bit more with our friends, even if we are not sure that they are in the right…

Quick Silber

Old faithful, he never lets me down:

1. Silber and cutlery: "Where was I before I got excited about the silverware?"

2. Silber about corporate America: "While XYZ does what? Just holds the money and build lousy cars."

3. Silber in a moment of uplifting: "The big dividend in the sky - the cash that the company yields when it's being liquidated."

4. [Without words] "The sad thing about this [material] is that this is what investment bankers think about when they hear the word 'Stripping.'" [We were talking about bonds.]
