Last Wednesday, February 7th, two associates and an accomplished private equity professional participated in the SPEC Associates panel. To a room of over 50 students, Alexa du Pont of RRE Ventures, Tushar Maloo of Apax Partners and Matthew Murray of NY Private Equity discussed the ins-and-outs of the private equity industry, their roles and responsibilities and how to land a job.
Some key takeaways from the evening came from Alexa du Pont, who advised students interested in VC to hold out for the right firm, because "fit is everything." Working in such close quarters with other associates and more importantly, general partners, it is key that everyone can get along and also be themselves.
Tushar was also tremendously helpful for those students looking to get a better grasp on the differences between VC and private equity jobs. Tushar has a unique background of having worked for Alan Patricof (Founder of Apax Partners, and thought to be the father of venture capital) and also the LBO teams at Apax. His insight highlighted the need for more "gut instinct" on the VC side, whereas late stage private equity or (aka leveraged buyouts) are more financial engineering.
Lastly, Matthew Murray advised the attendees on how to watch for shifts and trends in this private equity market and the usefulness of capital raising as a leading indicator.
In all, this esteemed panel allowed us a special glimpse into their prestigious world. Moreover, their candor helped demystify the clandestine world of private equity. Hopefully with their help, those of us interested will soon land these highly coveted jobs.
