Highlights from NYU Stern media coverage in June and July included remarks from Dean Thomas Cooley on the challenges facing the G-8 leaders in the Associated Press and five op-ed articles authored by Stern faculty: the first by Professor Lawrence White in Dow Jones Capital Markets Report, advocating for increased market competition in the credit rating industry; the second by Professor Tunku Varadarajan in The Wall Street Journal, examining his recent interview with politician and writer William Hague; the third by Professor Robert Wright in Reason Magazine on the state of the US economy, sharing concerns about the country's current debt levels as well as educational and financial systems; and the fourth and fifth both authored by Professor Nouriel Roubini in The Korea Herald and Time International Asia, discussing the likelihood of global stagflation as the rate of inflation continues to rise around the world and examining the role of sovereign wealth funds in today’s growing credit crisis, respectively.

The New York Times: "In Volatile Times, Investors Tune in All and Any Predictions"

July 28, 2008

Using his Z-Score model, Professor Edward Altman predicted Ford Motor's bankruptcy risk. His projections for Ford Motor Company and his forecast for corporate debt defaults were cited in two articles and a video on Bloomberg, International Herald Tribune, The Washington Times and ten journals and websites.

 

The New York Times: "Microsoft Seeks Path Beyond Gates's Legacy"

June 27, 2008

Professor Michael Katz's joint research on network effects and the use of technology standards as weapons was highlighted in an article about the rise of Microsoft with Bill Gates at the helm. Additional coverage appeared in the International Herald Tribune.

July 4, 2008

NYU Stern MBA student and Yankees intern Tony Odierno's first pitch at the recent All-Star game in Yankee Stadium was featured in two New York Times pieces. Odierno also appeared on CBS Evening News to talk about life in the military prior to being injured in Iraq

 

SmartMoney.com: "Social Entrepreneurs: Naya Jeevan for Kids"

July 2008

Recent graduate Saad Tabani (MBA '08) sat down with SmartMoney.com to talk about his joint social venture, Naya Jeevan for Kids (NJFK), which was recently awarded $75,000 in seed funding from Stern's Business Plan Competition. 


The Wall Street Journal: "China Beckons for MBA Trips"

In a trend piece on study trips to China, Jaki Sitterle, managing director of Executive Programs, and executive MBA student Gautham Parthasarathy illustrated the value of Global Study Tours in Stern's Executive MBA Program. A recent class visit to Suzhou Industrial Park was also pictured in The Wall Street Journal Online

July 30, 2008

Professor Nouriel Roubini's bearish economic views were cited in a piece about Merrill Lynch's recent writedown and highlighted  in The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, The New York Times, Bloomberg, Barron's, BBC, CNBC, CNN Headline News, Forbes, Reuters, USA Today, US News & World Report and more than 40 journals and websites. In an op-ed in Time International Asia, he examined the role that sovereign wealth funds might play as the financial crisis continues, with additional coverage appearing in Reuters, The New York Times, International Herald Tribune and The Guardian. In another op-ed in The Korea Herald, he offered his perspective on the effects of rising global inflation and the likelihood of global stagflation, with additional coverage appearing in the Journal of Turkish Weekly and Project Syndicate.

In a piece about the G-8, Dean Thomas Cooley commented on the challenges facing this year's summit, with additional coverage on American Public Radio's "Marketplace," MSN Money, Yahoo! News, and in Deseret Morning News, The Hindu, PR Insider, Ventura County Star, Virginian-Pilot and The Star Ledger.  Additionally, Dean Cooley offered his perspective in a Bloomberg article about Vietnam's inflation rate, and was featured in the Maeil Business Newspaper of Korea, discussing the state of the economy.

Professor Richard Sylla shared his perspective in an article comparing former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to his successor Andrew Cuomo, with additional coverage in The Wall Street Journal blog.  He discussed the similarities between the government's plan to shore up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and some reforms of the New-Deal era in Newsweek, provided a historical perspective to a discussion about the future of US markets on CNNMoney.com and in US News & World Report, and participated in an in-depth discussion about next steps for Federal Reserve policymakers on Marketplace Radio.

 

Dow Jones Capital Markets Report: "Talk Back: It's Time for Real Competition in Rating Game"
June 16, 2008

Professor Lawrence White authored an op-ed, advocating for increased market competition in the credit rating industry. He shared his perspective about the SEC's response to the struggling mortgage market and discussed the role of credit rating agencies in Bloomberg, Crain's New York, The Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, Handelsblatt, The China Post, Financial Week and WNYC. On the BBC, Professor White examined the differences between McCain and Obama's policies and rhetoric regarding tax, trade, the economic slowdown, foreclosures, Medicare, social security and more.

Professor Robert Wright authored an op-ed on the country's economic outlook, citing the educational and financial systems as well as national and private debt as significant concerns. He provided a historical perspective on the popularity of lottery games during uncertain economic times on Herald Net.
