Did You Know…That There is a Committee at Stern Dedicated to Community Service?
Meredith Glansberg
Well now you do! Did you also know that we have an ecampusgroup page and mailing list? I’m sure you could have guessed.
Now that you know, get involved by signing up today for Community Service @ Stern. Although this time of year can become out of control, it is important to take a step back and remember why we all made this commitment to getting our MBAs. Aside from career, academic and social goals, I am sure that there are more than a few of us who truly came to Stern in part to make a difference in our communities and in the school. It’s all too easy for the “difference-making” to go on the back-burner, so let’s make a commitment now for Stern to be known as an institution that prioritizes giving back.
The Community Service group is looking for full and part-time students who want to get involved and promote Stern Impact. The committee’s purpose is to aid students who want to positively affect their community by providing various opportunities to contribute. You’ll help others…you’ll make Stern look good…you’ll feel good…and it will definitely keep you from checking the latest on Yahoo Finance for a few hours.
Several events have already been planned for the upcoming year. On Sunday 10/26, the committee has organized a group of students to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. The next upcoming major event will be the Food Fight in November, benefiting America’s Second Harvest Food Bank Network. Finally, the group will be organizing the annual Charity Poker in February.
Aside from the previously planned events, the committee would like to hold two to three additional major events as well as regular opportunities for involvement by Stern students. Examples include involvement at local shelters or soup kitchens, visits to the elderly, etc. All opportunities will be specifically planned to directly engage community members in need while at the same time providing opportunities for Stern students to network. Full-time and part-time students, alumni, partners and friends can get to know one another while providing much needed assistance to others.
The committee would also like to hear from students who are already independently involved with forms of community service and volunteerism. The group will look to support existing student projects and aid with publicizing them to Stern.
As a first step, sign up as soon as possible for the Community Service @ Stern on ecampusgroups in order to get occasional e-mails about ways to get involved. Additionally, feel free to contact MBA2 officers Patrick Curzio, Diana Espin or Carla Quintana or MBA1 officers Philip Davis, Meredith Glansberg, Molly Heglund, Irene Papajohn or Punit Seth for more information. All ideas are welcome!
There are 832 full-timers and 2,137 part-timers here at Stern. If each of us dedicates just one afternoon this year towards making a difference, it really will make an enormous impact. And you just might have an amazing time in the process.
