Each year graduate students from the top MBA schools gather far and wide to compete in business case competitions. These privileged few get the chance to flex their intellectual muscles, travel to exotic places (like Pittsburgh and Paris!!), meet industry leaders, network and demonstrate why they are the best at what they do.

While every competition is meant to challenge you (I know, great play on words) the rewards certainly outweigh the costs. Dan Huber, an MBA 2 whose team took first place in the JP Morgan Case Competition last year explained, “the best part of the experience was learning about the role of investment bankers. You can only get so much from corporate and OCD presentations, actually rolling up your sleeves and doing the work really gives you insight into the industry… it was, overall, a tough yet worthwhile experience and I’m very thankful for the opportunity”.

Of course, the learning experience is great, but does it help during those interviews?  "Absolutely" responds Amy Kovitz, a MBA 2 who took part in the Real Estate Case Competition at the University of Texas at Austin. "It's different from involvement in school activities or clubs, and interviewers have consistently asked me about it. It has truly been a fantastic addition to my business exposure and resume story".

Overall, the business case competitions are a great place to make new friends, strengthen your interview story and garner exposure to a company, industry or country.

You can find these opportunities listed on the Stern MBA Student Activities Website under “Events & Competitions”. This webpage points to a multiple array of business case competitions with links to websites and information regarding locations, the particular types of industry or function, registration deadlines and event dates.

If you’ve already seen the light and have decided to take part in a competition, we would appreciate your feedback to better understand what made it professionally and personally rewarding for you. By tracking these competitions, we'll be able to better promote future opportunities and the talent of Stern students. MBA Student Activities has created a feedback form that you can also find under “Events & Competitions”.
