Ever wonder what OutClass does besides put on the best Beer Blast of the year (which is coming up April 16th)? Well, on Mar 1st, nine full-time and part-time OutClass members and some partners participated in a community service project for the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community Center in Greenwich Village.
OutClass was joined by members of its corporate sponsor American Express Pride (Amex's LGBT group), and members of Stern Undergrad's LGBT student club, Pride Corp, to do some much needed painting in the David Bohnett Cyber Center and the Center's second floor hallway.
The LGBT Community Center (www.gaycenter.org) was established in 1983 and has grown to become the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast and second largest LGBT community center in the world. The Center provides groundbreaking social service, public policy, educational, cultural and recreational programs to more than 6,000 people and 300 groups who meet there every week.
Rebecca Kramer Rosengard, co-president of OutClass, said it best, "The LGBT Center … plays a vital role in New York City's queer community. The room[s] we painted … [are some] of the Center's most utilized spaces, so it feels good knowing that our efforts will benefit so many in the community."
The Center serves more than just the LGBT community. The Center's resources, including the David Bohnett Cyber Center, are open to the public. Also, the Center serves as one of NYC's most visited poll locations for local, state, and federal votes and elections.
After the paint job, the proud crew had a mimosa soaked, finger licking brunch at the Bone Lick Park Bar-B-Que on Greenwich Ave. The community service and brunch were a great chance for OutClass to come to together as a group beyond our recruiting and social events and make a small but appreciated difference for a local landmark.
