“Oh, my God! She’s fashion roadkill!”
- Stanford Blatch, Sex and the City

Let me tell you, although Stern’s Social Enterprise Association (SEA) and Luxury & Retail Club (LRC) put on a killer event, there was NO fashion roadkill this past Friday night at Think Social Drink Local 2009 (TDSL). TSDL was a fantastic, blowout event complete with organic and locally produced beverages and a fashion show of eco-friendly/socially responsible designs.

The highlight of the event was, of course, the fashion show: La Vie en Vert. The TSDL models strutted their fiercest Naomi Campbell walks down a 50-foot runway while sporting eco-friendly threads and handmade accessories. Several designers were represented in the show:

Cmarchuska (pronounced: see-mar-chew-ska) is a line of women’s dresses and men’s and women’s t-shirts made from organic fabrics. A former Wall Street analyst, Christine Marchuska started the label after she realized she’d rather be saving the planet and our wardrobes with eco-friendly fashion than selling synthetic collateralized debt obligations.

Panda Snacks also had their bamboo clothing on display. Launched four years ago by Deborah Boria and Dearrick Krupp, Panda Snacks clothing gets its name from an incredibly sustainable source: bamboo (hence the name).

Sue Rock rocked it on the catwalk with her handmade knitwear. Sue Rock’s socially responsible fashion line of the same name recycles fabrics from fashion manufacturers. Sue Rock then takes the used fabrics and repurposes them into handmade clothing, which the proceeds and items then benefit victims of domestic abuse.

If you were at the event, you were probably bedazzled by the luscious jewelry and accessories on the necks of the TSDL models. Those handcrafted pieces are the work of Chelsea Paskvan. Only in her junior year studying design at Kent State, Chelsea is a successful, young entrepreneur who has made items for celebrities around the country.

Even though La Vie en Vert was all about the eco-friendly and socially responsible clothing, the models would not have looked so fabulous without the magic touch of Ross Barry and crew from Fresh. Fresh is a high-end beauty company in the LVMH family of luxury brands. Appropriately for our little event, Fresh uses natural ingredients in all of its cosmetics, skincare and fragrances.

Juara was also at TSDL. Juara is a skincare line developed by Metta Murdaya and made from all-natural ingredients. Metta started the her line when she realized there was a market not only for the nutrient-rich botanicals from her native Indonesia, but also for a business model that itself is eco-friendly. Juara reminds us that no matter what the size of the organization, we all have the responsibility and capability to reduce our impact on the environment.

No one was prouder of the SEA and LRC students for putting on such a great event than Dean Gary Fraser. I caught up with Gary during the last minute hustle and bustle before the fashion show. “It’s amazing what these Stern students have done tonight. There was nothing like this when I was a student at Stern. Every year this event gets better and better.”

Several people from SEA and LRC played a huge role in making the event such a smash success. Among the most instrumental are Jodi Zamore, Alisa Baker, Megan LaMothe, and Shimul Shah. While you were sipping on your VeeV vodka drinks, these ladies were orchestrating the hot mess behind the scenes. Shimul and Alisa were the first-year MBAs behind TSDL this year. After a much-deserved break this weekend, they are excited to already start plans to make next year’s event even more fabulous. Ladies, we can’t wait to see the fierceness you cook up in 2010!
