Despite the crazy weather rollercoaster we've been on - the temperature IS gradually dropping, and one of these days the cold might just be here to stay. The smell of falling wet leaves and pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks signals one thing - it's time to find the perfect winter coat. By the time it's actually frigid here in New York City, coats and hats have been replaced by melon-colored bikinis and tissue tees. Therefore, I recommend you go outerwear shopping now, and in the spirit of the season - give your old winter coat to someone less fortunate.

Each year during the month of December, NYCares conducts a holiday coat drive to provide warm winter coats for the 90% of homeless and under privileged people who are without them. Coats can be donated anytime at the following locations from December 1 -31st.

- New York City Police Precincts
- Janovic Paint and Decorating Centers
- Oz Moving and Storage Locations
- The Pond at Bryant Park (42nd and 6th Ave)
- Time Warner Cable Stores

Now that you know what to do with your old coats, it's time to go shopping.

Women - A classic wool coat in a dark grey, black or navy (like J.Crew's Stadium Cloth Boulevard Coat) is the most versatile, and can be dressed up or down. For weekends - a dark denim canvas or leather motorcycle jacket is the perfect cover up for a mini or skinny jeans by night- and goes equally well with your rain boots by day. For the truly cold days when you don't care what you look like - you need a down puffer. Norma Kamali's famous sleeping bag coat retails for $600, but you can get the cheap chic version from her new line at WalMart and pay just $30. Another good idea would be to pick up a pair of Hunter Wellies - the original Scottish rain boot made popular stateside by Kate Moss (pants optional). Add welly-socks for warmth. Available at Wink (Spring nr. W Broadway and at winknyc.com). (Sleeping Bag/Kate Moss Photos)

Men - Shop in peace at J.Crew's new men's store on Broome and Broadway, or head over to Liquor Store at West Broadway and White Street for more hand picked guys-only merchandise. They've partnered with designers such as Belstaff, Barbour and Mackintosh to bring more upscale and edgy jackets to stores. For an even less commercial selection, visit Freeman's Sporting Club on Rivington between Bowery and Christie (there's a barber and apothecary inside as well). (Freemans/Liquor Store Photos)

Still need more incentive? The following retailers give discounts when you show your student ID.
Club Monaco - 20% off
J.Crew/Madewell - 15% off
TopShop/TopMan - 10% off
