YA: Like anything else, networking is a skill that's developed over time. But common mistakes that people make is that they forget to send thank- you notes to those they meet, or they don't follow-up with new contacts that they made. The difference between a good networker and a great networker is that a great networker finds ways to distinguish themselves in the crowd.

SN: I have heard about some crazy tactics potential job-seekers use to get in front of recruiters in this environment. What do you suggest people do to build a good reputation to potential employers during a transition?

YA: While interviewing and networking, it is important to show that you are knowledgeable and passionate about the job. Develop strong relationships with alumni, students and professors as you can leverage their knowledge of the industry and function that interests you. Our last event called "Multi-Year Career Strategies" covered these topics in more detail.

SN: Should people approach their current managers if they want to switch to a different function within their firm?

YA: If you are going to make a switch internally, it is key to understand the landscape, for example, the hiring needs and freezes, and group culture and morale. If you believe that it is the right time to move, make sure you know what the requirements of the job are. You should also take a proactive role in influencing the decision of the hiring managers.

SN: This is great advice that I am sure will help many Langone students. What are some of the upcoming CCWP events that Langone students can look forward to?
