Many people will be around New York this summer and will be able to take advantage of the great venues it has to offer for live performances. All over the city, popular outdoor areas turn into band shells and draw some of the finest artists from all over the globe. Below are a few venues to check out as well as some notable acts coming to town over the next few months.

Venues

Santos Party House – A good spot to check out on a weeknight for guest DJs and even some international acts. Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest was their resident Friday DJ for a while

Knitting Factory – This multi-tiered clangorous music hall, which has been a downtown staple for the last few decades, has recently relocated to Brooklyn. It is home to many local artists as well as up and coming acts

Central Park SummerStage – A landmark venue celebrating 25 years of promoting free music and entertainment. Most concerts are free with the exception of a few big names (listed below) that are offered at relatively fair values. Events requiring tickets tend to sell out quickly but additional shows are often supplemented

Warm Up @P.S.1– These days you are destined to find more toddlers and Tory Burch flats than hipsters, but the truth remains, P.S.1 still gets great artists. Once the Summer 2010 line up is released you can preview the acts and plan you Saturday afternoons accordingly.

Sunday Best @BKLYN Yard – If you are into a more eclectic underground scene, or perhaps looking for an indigenous Brooklyn dance party, look no further than Sunday Best. Located right along the Gowanus canal, it provides both scenic and eurhythmic stimuli. Transplant New Yorkers are besought to attend, just don’t go and tell UrbanDaddy

One Step Beyond @AMNH – If you are native to this area then you have undoubtedly had a 3rd grade field trip to the planetarium at the Museum of Natural History. However, you may enjoy it more now with booze and live music. Once a month on Fridays, One Step Beyond hosts DJs and artists for a 4-hour long astronomical dance party. Past acts have included Kanye West and Kid Siste
